Eastside/La Semana Reporter
What I do here
I am the Tulsa Flyer’s Eastside/La Semana reporter, where my beat will focus on Latino communities on Tulsa’s eastside. My reporting will appear in both English and Spanish, and in the pages of the bilingual newspaper La Semana del Sur. I plan to cover anything and everything impacting the community, including health care, immigration, religion and more. I also aim to cover the joy happening in the community. I’m here to tell community-centered stories, hold officials accountable and create impact with my reporting.
My Background
I was born and raised in Houston. My journalism background started in high school when I joined the yearbook staff. I’ve known since I was 14 years old that I wanted to tell stories about everyday people.
I went to college at the University of Texas at Arlington, where I spent my senior year as the editor-in-chief of the collegiate newspaper, The Shorthorn. I’ve interned at The Dallas Morning News and KERA, the NPR affiliate in Dallas-Fort Worth.
Before coming to Tulsa, I spent two years at the Houston Landing, covering everything from education to the environment. I spearheaded the Landing’s Spanish language task force, where we launched a newsletter, created bimonthly video recaps and hosted events in Spanish.
I decided to join the Tulsa Flyer because its community-centered mission is important to me. I’m excited to learn more about the issues impacting this community and the joy they share with each other.
Where can you find me in Tulsa?
I’m new to town so I’ll be checking out anything and everything! I recently hiked Turkey Mountain and I can’t wait to check out other trails around Tulsa. Please send me your best Mexican food spots!
Journalistic ethics
I aim to be accurate, objective, transparent and fair in my reporting. I don’t accept gifts or favors in exchange for coverage. I don’t donate to political campaigns, sign petitions or take a public stance on issues that may appear in our reporting. I recuse myself from stories in which I have a personal interest.
