LUCY BAPTISTE
General Assignment Reporter, The Oklahoma Eagle
What I do here
I am a general assignment reporter at The Oklahoma Eagle, covering stories that matter to Tulsa residents, with particular attention to communities whose voices and experiences are often overlooked. I believe some of the most important stories begin with listening to the people living them.
I am a first generation Garifuna American, born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York City. Before becoming a journalist, I spent nearly a decade working in health care, an experience that shaped my understanding of how institutions and public policies affect people’s everyday lives.
I earned my master’s degree in engagement journalism from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. I am also a photographer and visual storyteller who believes images can tell stories in ways words alone sometimes cannot.
My journalism career took me to Chicago, where I reported on immigration and the experiences of immigrant communities for Borderless Magazine. As a contributor to The VP Chicago, my reporting focused on civic engagement, education and Chicago’s transition to an elected school board.
Where can you find me in Tulsa?
I’m new to Tulsa and look forward to getting to know the city beyond the newsroom. I welcome story ideas, questions, and conversations with residents.
Journalistic ethics
I approach journalism with curiosity, empathy and a commitment to getting the story right. I believe reporting should go beyond identifying problems to helping people understand how decisions affect their lives. It should also hold those in power to account.
